The film is loosely based on the short story Quitters, Inc. by Stephen King.
John Abraham had quit smoking, but had to smoke 99 cigarettes a day to get into character for the film.
Director Anurag Kashyap approached Kay Kay Menon for the lead role, but he declined suggesting Kashyap to cast an actor having stardom. Anurag then approached Shah Rukh Khan, who ultimately declined as he felt the film was "anti-smoking". John Abraham was the only star-actor to love the script, and agreed to do it.
