Angered at the attempt over the life of his brother, Bose Kaalai commits murder and ends up in prison. His wife, Chandra, wants her children to be away from a life of violence and relocates to Chennai. Over the years, the family begins to pick up the broken pieces. The son, Selva becomes a small-time businessman. The daughter, Mangai studies law and also helps with her brother's business. When 16 years later, Bose returns, he brings back a ghost from their past in the form of Baskaran, the vengeful son of the man who Bose murdered.

'Vaanam Kottattum' marks the debut of singer Sid Sriram as a music composer.

Following the blockbuster movie 'Namma Veetu Pillai' where she played Sivakarthikeyan's sister, Aishwarya Rajesh also plays the sister of Vikram Prabhu in this movie. The story revolves around the siblings.

After acting in the critically acclaimed movie 'Thupakki Munai' which was also directed by Mani Ratnam's associate Dinesh Selvaraj. Actor Vikram Prabhu is acting in 'Vaanam Kottattum' which is directed by Dhana.
