Set against a rural backdrop, this socially relevant tale realistically probes social issues like poverty, dowry and the caste system.
The story revolves around a family in which the father is of a rigid mindset. He forcibly gets Chenna (Shobha) his daughter married to an aged alcoholic man, because of a promised dowry.
His own son, who is of a progressive way of thinking opposes this ‘trade’ and further defies his father by marrying Parvati, who happens to be from a 'low' caste. Consequently, he has to set up house in the Harijan section of the village and is forced to become involved in corrupt village politics. What will the future hold in store for all the members of the family?
