Suli (1978)

Set against a rural background, this emotionally charged drama revolves around Savitri, a beautiful young woman who is forced by circumstance to make great sacrifices in her life.

In a pristine village, an elderly medicine woman known fondly as Ajji lives with her two grandchildren, Savitri and Simha, whom she brings them up with a lot of love and care. When a wealthy landowner, Sowcar's life is threatened by snakebite, the Ajji treats him.

However, in a tragic twist, Ajji passes away after a fall, but not before she takes a promise from Savitri to try her best to ensure that Simha becomes highly educated and successful. Savitri also promises Ajji never to accept help from anyone, especially not Venkanna, an evil man.

True to her promise, Savitri remains fiercely independent and ensures that Simha becomes well educated. Savitri falls in love with Chelva, an honest and hard working man. They plan to get married. When money is required for Simha's needs Chelva tries to help, but Simha speaks ill of their relationship and takes help from Venkanna instead. Savitri becomes furious with Simha and forces him to return the money.

Simha is sent to the city for higher studies, and to fulfil the financial requirements Savitri and Chelva make great sacrifices. Will they be forced to sacrifice their love for Simha's sake? Will Simha understand the immensity of the sacrifices made by Savitri and Chelva and work hard towards completing his education? Or will he be led astray by the temptation of wine, women and wealth?
