The plot focuses on the anti-hero Riddick, who has been left for dead on a desert planet, where he finds himself fighting for his life against alien predators far more viscious than any human he has ever faced. Riddick is forced to use a beacon to alert the very bounty hunters he has been evading to come and collect him as this is the only way he can possibly escape. Soon from throughout the galaxy they descend on Riddick only to find themselves pawns in his greater scheme for revenge. With his enemies right where he wants them, Riddick unleashes a vicious attack of vengeance before returning to his home planet of Furya to save it from destruction. Vin Diesel is joined by Karl Urban who reprises the role of Vaako, former WWE wrestler Dave Bautista who plays Diaz and Katee Sackhoff who plays Dahl.

Vin Diesel got the rights to the "Riddick" franchise from Universal Pictures in exchange for making a cameo appearance in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006). This allowed him to produce this film independently.

The film's production was in jeopardy of shutting down when there was a delay in financing. Vin Diesel funded the film himself until the bank loan came through.
