A decent attempt to recreate the magic of VVS
on

After an unexpected blockbuster in the form of Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam, the entire team of that film is back to deliver Rajini Murugan in the lines of it in hope of a similar box office success. VVS was a game changer for Sivakarthikeyan and it’s phenomenal run made him take much more ‘hero-ish’ roles with more action and romance in films such as Kaaki Sattai and Maan Karate. The Ponram-Siva-Soori-Imman combination has proved to be a minimum guarantee cum sure victory group and it’s no wonder that Lingusamy spotted this and went along with producing Rajini Murugan. Two major changes are the pivotal character around whom the story travels and the heroine. In VVS, it was Sathyaraj and here it’s another veteran, Rajkiran. Keerthy Suresh, daughter of yesteryear heroine Menaka, after debuting in Tamil cinema with a forgettable Idhu Enna Maayam has bagged the heroine role for this flick. Another difference is the inclusion of a villain in the form of director Samuthirakani.

Rajini Murugan doesn’t have a gripping storyline nor does it acts like a wannabe edge-of-the-seat thriller. It’s the story of how the lead tries to win the heart of his childhood crush while trying to save his ancestral property from the hands of a villain. First half has it’s usual comedy snippets along with the story as it shows how Siva tries to woo Keerthy along with Soori. Second half sees Siva locking horns with Samuthirakani in which we get to witness the villain in all his glory.

Soori’s comedy in his last few films weren’t up to the mark and this can very well be said as a comeback film for him. Irrespective of how well they fare in other’s direction, if it’s director Rajesh for Santhanam then it must be Ponram for Soori when it comes to delivering their best. Siva-Soori chemistry is amazing and it’s the highlight of the film which is followed by Rajkiran’s impeccable acting skills in his role as Siva’s grandfather with a wicked sense of humour. Keethy wins the crowd with her expressions and timing sense. Though her love track looks a bit confused and rushed, her acting is picture perfect. Imman sticks to his native village theme with his music and some songs are hummable. Ennama ippadi panreengalema track is literally being played at the rate of once every hour in all radio stations for months now and finally seeing the peppy number along with some sharp moves from Siva is a worthy wait.

Overall, Rajini Murugan is a decent entertainer which would do justice to that Rs. 120 we shell and out of all four pongal releases, this film has bagged the most family audiences making it a successful venture.
