Exceptionally directed, brilliantly acted with great characters and an unforgettable story! This is not just Kollywood at its finest, but one of the BEST movies of the year!

To be honest, I rarely watch any Tamil movies (or 'Indian' movies per se). Occasionally, you hear a glimmer that a movie is doing well and has been received positively by fans. Being a Kamal Hassan fan, his recent outings are not up to par; even 'Vishwaroopam' was a let down, and his most recent film 'Uttama Villain' was underwhelming. Then I heard about 'Papanasam'. I had absolutely no idea where this movie came from as I didn't really follow the production or release time line. It was by word of mouth that it had been released here in Malaysia. After reading the plot, I was intrigued. I thought to myself, why not, let's watch it.

The trailer had this 'family-oriented vibe' to the proceedings, something Kamal had not done in a while. A nice change of pace as well. The movie starts slowly, and soon I realized how 'Earthed' the movie was; the characters had this positive vibe and the direction was always on-the-dot for exposing character traits early on. It took its time and it was handled really well without ever being boring.

As things got a little more complicated, I thought to myself, this is where the movie might falter. It didn't. It kept going at a brilliant pace and the characters stayed true to themselves without ever going 'over-the-top'. Hats off to the director (and cinematography work). The acting is nothing short of brilliant, with small nuances here and there, making you believe the characters and action are real. This is really unlike any previous Tamil movies I have seen.

The story is so simple, yet the way the events unfold are truly magnificent. Flashbacks are used constantly in Tamil movies to great annoyance; not here. It is a PRIME example of how flashbacks should be used in ANY movies.

Without going into too much plot details, let's just say this movie is very emotional and tremendously powerful. There was NO MUSICAL NUMBERS/DANCE (which was quite a surprise for me) and the musical score was merely used only to accentuate the character's emotions and on-screen presence.

Kamal Hassan's acting at his finest. This is how you make a Tamil movie. Absolutely memorable to the last scene. I could almost say this is a 'classic' Kamal movie.

A must watch for any fans of any movies, not just Kamal fans.

This is one the best movies I have seen in 2015 (...and this includes all other English movies I have seen!).

P/S: The other Kamal Hassan movie I loved to bits is 2009's "Unnaipol Oruvan"; small trivia - the original of this movie "A Wednesday!" appeared on TV that Suyambu was watching.
