Salvador Mallo (Antonio Banderas) is a film director on the decline. Salvador faces a series of re-encounters - some physical, others remembered. These include his childhood in the 1960s, when he emigrated together with his family to Paterna in search of prosperity, his first adult love in Madrid in the 1980s, the pain of breakup, writing as a therapy to forget, the premature discovery of cinema, facing the impossibility of continuing filming and more.

Julieta Serrano and Antonio Banderas had already played mother and son more than 30 years before, in two other movies by Pedro Almodóvar: Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988) and Matador (1986)

This film is inspired by Federico Fellini's film 8 1/2 (1963).
