Where did you watch this movie?

From Scott Cooper, the critically-acclaimed writer and director of 'Crazy Heart', comes a gripping and gritty drama about family, fate, circumstance, and justice. Russell Baze (Christian Bale) has a rough life: he works a dead-end blue collar job at the local steel mill by day, and cares for his terminally ill father by night. When Russell’s brother Rodney (Casey Affleck) returns home from serving time in Iraq, he gets lured into one of the most ruthless crime rings in the Northeast and mysteriously disappears. The police fail to crack the case, so with nothing left to lose, Russell takes matters into his own hands, putting his life on the line to seek justice for his brother. The impressive cast of Christian Bale and Casey Affleck are rounded out by Woody Harrelson, Forest Whitaker, Zoe Saldana, Sam Shepard and Willem Dafoe.

Trivia:
Leonardo DiCaprio was originally set to star with Ridley Scott directing; both remained attached to the project as producers.

Sam Shepard’s character is the uncle of Casey Affleck and Christian Bale’s characters; he plays a retired steel mill worker.

Dafoe’s character is a bookie who’s mired in the criminal underworld, but also a friend of the family and a member of the community.

Christian Bale did his own training to work at the active steel mill and can be seen working there in the film without a stunt double.

Willem Dafoe also grew up in a mill town, but it was a paper mill instead of a steel mill.

Casey Affleck’s character is a war veteran returning home from Iraq and suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

The Carrie Furnace located in Pennsylvania, a now-defunct blast furnace that’s become an historical landmark, formed the germ for Cooper’s story idea and even the eventual color palette of the film.

The Make a Wish Foundation brought a boy who wished to meet Christian Bale to the set, and he and his family were able to spend the day with the cast and crew.

In 2011 Scott Cooper promised Christian Bale that the director wouldn't make this thriller without him. Unfortunately Bale's schedule didn't permit him to participate in the project, but the actor couldn't get the story out of his mind. Later on Bale's schedule cleared up and the shooting of the film commenced in April of 2012.

Scott Cooper rewrote the script and the character of Russell Baze specifically for Christian Bale even though the two had never met and Cooper didn't know whether the actor would take on the role or not.

The project was first announced to be directed by Rupert Sanders and starring Christian Bale. Sanders dropped out and Scott Cooper was hired.

Channing Tatum, Taylor Kitsch, Max Irons and Garrett Hedlund were considered to play Christian Bale's brother. Casey Affleck was finally cast.

Billy Bob Thornton was considered for a role but Woody Harrelson was eventually cast.

Leonardo DiCaprio was considered for the lead role in the early stages of production.
