At the time when he was directing his first feature, Fernando Fernán Gómez was already a star in Spain. Not only was he popular, he had also marveled such directors as Juan Antonio Bardem and Luis García Berlanga. The (until then) actor, with the help of Luis María Delgado, took four stories from different authors (Edgar Allan Poe, Alexksandr Ivánovich Kuprín, Leonid Andréiev and Ramón Gómez de la Serna) and built an ensemble piece as absurd as it is brilliant. Carlos’ visit to his fiancé, a nurse at an insane asylum, is an excuse to discover the hilarious events that led a series of people to madness. A black comedy that surprises for its use of cinematic tools that are now considered to be modern, and in which madness and sanity walk on very blurred edges.
