Polish film director and screenwriter Jerzy Kawalerowicz was noted for his powerful, detail-oriented imagery and the depth of ideas in his films. Jerzy had started out as an assistant director after which he made his 1951 directorial debut The Village Mill. His 1966 adaptation of the Bolesław Prus' historical novel, 'Pharaoh' was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He was a member of the jury at the 6th Moscow International Film Festival. He was also the head of the jury at the 26th Berlin International Film Festival. Being the head of the prestigious KADR production unit, he had produced the finest polish films created by Andrzej Wajda, Tadeusz Konwicki and Juliusz Machulski. Jerzy has a daughter Kinga from his first marriage and two children- daughter, Agata and son, Piotr with his second wife. He had breathed his last on 27 December 2007 in Warsaw, Poland and his last film, Quo Vadis, was considered the largest budget for a Polish movie as of 2011.
