'Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam' is an emotionally charged romantic drama that delves into the suffering and disharmony caused in relationships when negative emotions such as possessiveness and jealousy get in the way. The movie primarily revolves around Radha, whose childhood friend is Suraj, an up-and-coming singer. Gopal Kishan (Shahrukh Khan) is a wealthy Business tycoon. At a very young age, he falls in love at first sight with Radha (Madhuri Dixit). Gopal and Radha get married. Gopal is very expressive in his love towards his wife, but, she seems to take it for granted and doesn't openly reciprocate the loving overtures from her husband. As much as he loves Radha, Gopal cannot stand her younger brother Prashant (Atul Aghnihotri) who depends on them financially. Gopal gets even more annoyed that his wife is always talking on the phone with Suraj (Salman Khan), and seems to share everything with him, including intimate details of their relationship. Gopal starts suspecting that Radha is having an affair with Suraj and is extremely jealous. The jealousy and suspicion becomes so obsessive and all consuming that Gopal soon throws Radha out of the house and later gives her a letter of divorce, which leaves her heartbroken. Suraj is appalled that this has been done to his childhood friend and arranges to meet Gopal in order to try and persuade him that he has done wrong. Gopal brings a loaded gun to this meeting. In the meeting, Gopal blames Suraj for the problems between him and Radha - Suraj now feels guilty and promises to stay away from Radha for good. Can Suraj come to his friend's rescue and reunite Radha and Gopal?
