Set among Hare Krishna cultists, presented as dope-smoking hippies fronting for drug smugglers, this movie explores concepts of nationalist Indian values, social norms, traditions, customs and cultural values. Jasbir rebels from an unhappy family life, and becomes a drug addict in the clutches of hippies in Nepal. After several years her brother, Prashanth comes to know about her situation, and tries to rescue her. In order to do this he must face many dangerous situations, including Jasbir's own anger and resentment. His attempt to rescue her involves encounters with pop ideologies of liberation, crooks and rapists before the final reconciliation. How this reconciliation happens forms the crux of the story.

Trivia:
Dev Anand thought up the story for the film when he saw hippies and their fallen values in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Dev Anand tried convincing his children Suneil and Devina to play the younger roles of Prashant and Janice, but they were too shy and didn't want to.

The song "Dum Maaro Dum" was sampled in several songs and was also covered by many artists.

Mumtaz was offered the role of Dev Anand's sister but she insisted she play the role opposite Dev Anand. Everyone kept telling her that the film was about a brother and sister. Zeenat ended up with the better role, which made Mumtaz bitter.
