The movie was supposed to be filmed way back in 2005, but was shelved due to unknown reasons, but after Tees Maar Khan, director Farah Khan had considered making the film again and the script was completed by October 2012.

Several actresses were considered for the lead role, such as Sonakshi Sinha, Asin, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Parineeti Chopra and Katrina Kaif, the role was finalized with Deepika Padukone, which makes this movie her third collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan.

John Abraham was to play one of the supporting roles, but was replaced by Sonu Sood.
