Zoya is the master of erratic emotions, which is usual in real life. She paints a picture which is practical rather than the sugar coated Bollywood one. Her previous movies have stood out for it’s different outlook. “Dil Dhadakne Do” is one such case too. It’s a story of a dysfunctional upper class family who are involved in themselves so much that fail to acknowledge the obvious thing called life. They live a life away from each other emotionally. One fine day the older couple Anil Kapoor and Shefali Shah plan their anniversary celebration on a cruise where all the relatives and close friends are invited, that’s where the fun starts and everyone start to explore their emotional avenues.
As the movie plot is based on a cruise it takes you to exotic locations as it travels. The movie has the typical Zoya look with fabulous designer wear and creations. The entire cast was well dressed with great taste, which was styled to it’s detail depending on the character.
Anil Kapoor was seen in a different role, audience got to meet a older and mature Anil, who delivered a great performance as Mr.Mehra. The character was in sync with the script, which made it more interesting. He made a convincing father with loads of humor.
Shefali Shah was seen in a good role after a long time, she played Anil’s wife. The character was well etched, she did a terrific job as a insecure high society wife, who keeps everything to herself for the sake of better being.
Priyanka Chopra, her role was a pretty tough one and was well placed in story with mixed emotions. She unfolds the characteristics at a gullible pace. She not only looks like a million bucks but dished out a great performance as Ayesha Mehra.
Ranveer Singh is the show stopper with his humorous performance which cracks you up every now and then in the movie. He did a tremendous job in entertaining you for the entire runtime. In fact he carries the movie forward whenever it gets little sloppy. Ranveer as Kabir Mehra gave a commendable performance.
Farhan Akhthar and Anushka Sharma, what I would say was a extended cameo. They had very little to do with story, but they come at vital points of the film which takes you in a interesting direction, they were eye candies for their fans. Both of them did a good job with the given screen time.
The new found talent Ridhima Sud was a good catch, she did a great job with the character given to her “Nuri”. She was not only a swanky looker but also comes with good acting skills.
The supporting cast Rahul Bose, Zarina Wahab, Parmeet Sethi along with rest of the family make a great ensemble completing the mental bunch. They create a ruckus which makes you laugh out loud.
One character which needs a special mention was really special and it was called PLUTO whose voice was Aamir Khan, that character was well placed and the narration from that point of perspective was great and enjoyable. You will love this character in the movie.
The music was amazing, as usual Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy gave their best to Zoya. All the songs were good and were not forced in to the story. Priyanka and Farhan did great on their singing front. Cinematography was spectacular by Carlos Catalan who covered the exotic locations to its finest details. The editing was great by Anand Subaya & Manan Mehta, for a movie this long it was kept intact.
Zoya did what Woody Allen does in his movies, a quirky and unconventional way of displaying the emotions. “Dil Dhadakne Do” takes you on a mixed emotional journey with loads of laughter and fun which makes this long ride a enjoyable one….the heart beat is slow but beats at the right place!!!
