Guillermo del Toro's "Crimson Peak" is like a mish mash of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's vision with all its heart stopping opulence and colour palette and Ram Gopal Verma's craft where in horror thrills meet a Tarantino touch to the violence and gore that are hugely disturbing and shake u like a bolt from the blue.
Goth could not have gotten more visually stylish and splendid that it is here.Edith Cushing(a pristine pale and delicate Mia Wasikowska) is authoring a book on ghosts and has been requested to make it more romantic and rivetting. Her first encounters with ghosts had been one with that of her mother who keeps warning her to be aware of a certain Crimson Peak.Years later, Edith courted and married to a suave Sir Thomas Sharpe(Tom Hiddleton looking dashing with his piercing eyes and steely demeanor) moves into his creepy haunted mansion in England only to discover that it is a living nightmare with restless spirits all around seeking redemption with their new guest. To make matters worse an ice cold sister in law(Jessica Chastain) seems to be hiding a lot of untold and unsavory secrets. When the skeletons tumble out of the closet and an incestous sub plot laced with lust, love and betrayal tears her world apart,Edith has to protect herself and escape from the very jaws of death. The film's lavish production design, the articulate sets and elaborate costumes and hairdos are all vintage and cast a spell.
In smaller parts Jim Beaver and Charlie Hunnam as Edith's protective father who dies the most horrible death and the family physician /ophthalmologist who nurses a secret crush on the beautiful lady respectively sink their teeth into their meaty parts.Technically fabulous and truly haunting in mood, ambiance and its background score, Crimson peak is an artistic delight that will appeal to niche audiences of the period drama horror thriller category.
