This insightful and illuminating drama delves into concepts of friendship, fidelity, loyalty, commitment, marriage and love through the interplay between Nagaraj (played by Sivakumar) and Sampath (played by Rajinikant). They meet each other on the roadside as vendors trying to sell products to pedestrians, and their relationship develops into trusted friendship. Nagaraj is uncompromising in his affairs and tries to make gains in all transactions, be it business or personal. Sampath is righteous and conscientious, leading a simple but fulfilled life with happiness, peace and contentment. Nagaraj becomes successful in his affairs while Sampath struggles. Nagaraj is weak in matters of women and makes Bhuvana (played by Sumitra) pregnant in an illicit affair. Nagaraj is not willing to marry Bhuvana and marries his wealthy god-man's daughter. Sampath marries Bhuvana to restore pride of her already struggling family. The struggle is mainly due to untimely death of Bhuvana's elder brother played by Y.G. Mahendra. Bhuvana delivers a baby boy, named Babu, from the illicit relationship. The twist in the tale occurs when Nagaraj and his wife are unable to beget offspring from their marriage. Nagaraj tries to adopt the baby boy Babu from Sampath and Bhuvana. Will he succeed?

Trivia:
SP Muthuraman and Panchu Arunachalam initially wanted Rajini to play a small role in a film called 'Avalukku Oru Aasai', but after meeting him, both found him to have 'brightness' and decided to make him a solo hero in their project.

This film had an interesting role swap as Sivakumar played an anti-hero role, while Rajinikanth, an established villain played a positive hero in the film.

The film's success paved way for Rajinikanth to do more hero oriented films in his carreer.

The film is based on the novel of the same name by Maharishi.
