Trivia:
Kate Hudson was initially considered for Larson's role.

'Basmati Blues', marks Dan Baron's directorial debut.

"Basmati Blues" was first shot in 2013, but not enough scenes to make into a film were made because final stages of the production coincided with monsoon season, forcing the filmmakers to raise more money and do a reshoot, which took place in 2015.

Initially, the production was set to take place in Tamil Nadu, but due to a dry weather, it had to relocate to Kerala.

Rajit's hatred of the Taj Mahal came from a man the directors met in real life.

Since the directors' and co-writer hadn't previously seen any Bollywood films prior to making the film, so they did a movie marathon featuring films such as Awara, Dil Se, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Khamoshi, and Lagaan.

Donald Sutherland picked up the cost of his wardrobe himself.

Utkarsh Ambudkar at first bombed his first audition but eventually won his role due to his improvise background and chemistry with Brie Larson.

Basmati Blues became one of the first theatrical releases for the development arm of the home-entertainment company Shout! Factory.

The idea for the plot came out of a dinner party held by directors when conversation focused on Arundhati Roy's essay "The Greater Common Good."

Three years were spent by the directors pitching songwriters for the film. Eventually, they were able to get Stone Gossard as Baron's brother knew a guy who played poker with him, Sugarland as music supervisor Bonnie Greenberg had worked with one of their songwriter friends, and David Baerwald as he had been sitting next to Greenberg at a restaurant.
