Embedded with fierce action and intense emotion, this dark tale traces the twists and turns in the life of Karunan (Mammootty), an arrogant fisherman, who is released from prison after a five-year sentence.
Upon arriving back at his coastal village, he finds much has changed. Chandran (Rahman), his trusted Lieutenant, who is more like a younger brother, is now a worker at the nearby toddy shop. Chandran again joins him and helps Karunan in restructuring his life. Karunan is shocked to see that Madhavi (Menaka), whom he had once loved, is now married to Kumaran (Vincent), for whose sake he had gone to jail in the first place.
Soon, the awful truth that Kumaran had betrayed him, and was now in possession of everything that had once belonged to Karunan including his wealth, his woman and his position, dawns upon him. Consumed by anger and hatred, Karunan decides to retaliate against Kumaran, but is attacked severely at night by his goons.
Karunan is saved by Gopi (Mohanlal), an unemployed young man who accidentally witnesses the incident. Gopi becomes Karunan's close friend and starts staying with him and Chandran. In the meantime Devayani (Seema) a young woman, also joins them due to mysterious circumstances. How will Karunan exact revenge upon the powerful Kumaran? What does the future hold in store for him and his friends?
This movie was a blockbuster earning both critical acclaim and commercial success.
